Colorectal Polyps

What are Colorectal Polyps?

Colorectal polyps are small growths that form on the lining of the colon or rectum. Many are harmless, but some can slowly turn into colorectal cancer over time.

What are the different types of polyps?

The main types of colorectal polyps include:

i.) Hyperplastic polyps – These are usually small, common, and generally low risk, especially when found in the lower colon or rectum.
ii.) Adenomatous polyps (adenomas) – These are the most common precancerous polyps. Some stay harmless, but others can slowly develop into cancer over time if they are not removed.
iii.) Serrated polyps – These include types such as sessile serrated lesions and traditional serrated adenomas. Some of these can also become cancerous, and they may be harder to detect because they can be flatter than other polyps.
iv.) Inflammatory polyps – These are often seen in people with inflammatory bowel disease. They usually do not turn into cancer themselves, but they may be a sign of long-term inflammation in the bowel.
v.) Hamartomatous polyps – These are less common and are often linked to certain inherited conditions. A single one may be harmless, but multiple hamartomatous polyps can be associated with a higher cancer risk in some syndromes.

Other Risk Factors

1. Risk is higher with older age
2. Personal or family history of polyps or colorectal cancer
3. Smoking
4. Alcohol use
5. Excess weight
6. Low physical activity
7. Less healthy diet

Prevention

Regular colorectal screening is the best way to find polyps early. Healthy lifestyle habits, such as staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking, may also help lower risk.

Treatment

Most polyps are removed during a colonoscopy. Larger or more complex polyps may need a more advanced procedure or surgery.

Outlook (Prognosis)

The outlook is usually very good when polyps are found early and removed. Some patients will need follow-up colonoscopies, especially if the polyps are larger, more numerous, or of a higher-risk type.
