Functional Dyspepsia

What is Functional Dyspepsia?

Functional dyspepsia is a type of chronic indigestion. It causes ongoing symptoms in the upper abdomen, but tests do not show another clear cause, such as an ulcer or blockage.

Symptoms

Common symptoms include pain or burning in the upper abdomen, feeling full too quickly, feeling very full after meals, bloating, belching, and sometimes nausea.

Diagnosis

Doctors diagnose functional dyspepsia based on your symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and tests to rule out other causes. If no specific cause is found, the diagnosis may be functional dyspepsia.

Management

Treatment depends on your symptoms and may include changes in diet and lifestyle, medicines, and sometimes psychological therapies.

  • Dietary & Lifestyle Modifications
Some people improve by avoiding foods or drinks that trigger symptoms. Common triggers can include fizzy drinks, caffeine, and some other foods that irritate the stomach.
  • Medications
Medicines may include acid-reducing treatments such as H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). In some cases, doctors may also use other medicines depending on the person’s symptoms.

Outlook

Functional dyspepsia is often a long-term condition, but many people improve with treatment and symptom management. Different treatments work for different people, so care is often tailored to the individual.
